Box Score WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America advanced its 2018 record to 4-1 with a 65-42 victory over Neumann University on Saturday afternoon.
Catholic sophomore Megan Stafford stepped up big for the Cardinals and completed a double-double with 11 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Senior Briana Bull put a stop to the Neumann offense and recorded eight steals while she and sophomore Mollie Reynolds each registered a team-high of 12 points.
Stafford got things started for Catholic in the second minute of play when she tipped in a rebounded layup from classmate Sydney Poindexter. The Knights and Cards went back-and-forth in the opening minutes before a layup from Reynolds gave Catholic the advantage (9-8) that they did not concede through the rest of the game.
Catholic earned its largest lead of the first half during the second period when Poindexter completed a layup which advanced the Cardinals to 24-10 (14-point margin). The Knights hit three unanswered shots to cut the lead in half (24-17) but subsequent baskets from freshman CC Mooney and a three-pointer from senior Samantha Cowan put the Cardinals ahead, 31-23 at the break.
The Cardinals returned from the break to outscore the Knights 18-9 in the third period as Bull, Reynolds & Mooney each knocked down a shot from behind the arch.
Reynolds, who went 2-of-2 from long range, sunk her second three-point shot of the event in the 4th minute of the final quarter to put the Cardinals ahead by 19-points (55-36). Catholic followed with a 10-6 run to claim the nonconference win.
