WASHINGTON — The Catholic University of America volleyball team went 1-1 on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals hosted the second Landmark Conference Weekend. The Cards defeated Goucher, 3-0, but fell to No. 17 Juniata, 3-0.

Catholic got double-digit kills from rookie Patricia Martinez in both games while her classmate Maria Gonzalez went for 23-plus assists in each contest.

Against Goucher, Martinez had a team-high 11 kills and hit. 391 in the win.

Senior middle hitter Amy O'Connor was also strong at the net with nine kills and five blocks in the straight-set victory.

Freshman libero Christina Ciola posted a match-high 23 digs.

In the matchup against one of the nation's best teams, Catholic improved as each set went on but could not eclipse the 22-point mark.

Martinez once again had a team-high with 10 kills and added seven digs and two blocks.

Ciola chipped in 19 digs, while Gonzalez had 23 assists, six digs and two service aces.

Senior Brynn Cooley was all over the court against the Eagles with eight kills, an assist, a service ace, six digs and a block.

Catholic has a quick turnaround as they host Shenandoah on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
