Box Score 2 Frostburg, Md. – The Catholic University of America softball team finished out its nonconference schedule in strong fashion, traveling to Frostburg State on Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals were edged by the 27-win Bobcats in game one, 3-1, but rallied for an 8-7 win and doubleheader split.
Despite a home run from sophomore Megan Colline, the Cards could not get more than the run against Frostburg in game one, as Bobcat pitcher Allison Short worked around eight Catholic hits.
Rookie pitcher Kelly Lynch was strong for the Cardinals, striking out two while scattering six hits, but was undone by a game-winning, three-run home run in the bottom of the third.
The Catholic offense came out strong in game two, plating three in the first inning including RBI singles by Hailey Horton and Molly MacNeill.
Frostburg quickly answer however, with two runs in the bottom of the frame before going ahead with three more in the second and one in the third.
Facing a three-run deficit and only nine outs to go, the Cardinals rallied in the fifth as junior third baseman got the scoring started with a RBI single before MacNeill doubled for her second and third runs driven in.
The Cards went on to add to their lead in the sixth with an RBI double from junior catcher Kristina Lozupone and then a clutch sacrifice fly from Colline that proved to be the difference.
Catholic wraps up its regular season and looks to lock up a top-two seed in the playoffs on Saturday with a Landmark Conference doubleheader against Juniata, beginning at 1 p.m.
