CUA Softball Sweeps Shenandoah on the Road

Shenandoah, Va. – The Catholic University of America softball team continued its impressive start to the season, picking up two road victories at Shenandoah, 3-2 and 15-14 in nine innings. The Cardinals improve to 10-2 on the season, despite not playing a home game yet this year.

A pair of RBI from junior third baseman Erin Adams, including an RBI single in the top of the seventh gave CUA its first win of the evening. Catholic trailed 5-0 after three innings in game number two, but the Cards' offense exploded the top of the fourth. Head coach Bruce McConkey's team plated eight runs, keyed by a three-run home run by sophomore first baseman Alyssa Keane. Shenandoah twice, forcing extra innings and extra frame , but CUA responded, scoring three and four runs in the eighth and ninth for the win. 

In addition to some clutch hitting in game one, Catholic got an another impressive from rookie Kelly Lynch in the circle. The freshman tossed her sixth complete game of the season, scattering six hits while allowing just two runs with five strikeouts. Lynch improves to 5-1 on the year.

Junior shortstop and leadoff hitter Rebekah Hoisl once again set the table, scoring two runs with two stole bases in the game, while Adams went 2-for-4 out of the three-hole in the lineup.

In game two, the Hornets jumped out to any early lead, 5-0, after the third, but eight hits and eight runs in the very next inning put the Cardinals back in front.

Shenandoah would not go quietly however as they rallied for three runs in the third to force extras. CUA responded with three runs of its own in the top of the eighth, but the Hornets again had three more runs to push it to the the ninth.

Catholic ended a string a 3's, plating four runs in the top of the frame, which proved to be just enough as Shenandoah once again put up three more in the bottom half of the inning.

Seven different Cardinals had two-or-more hits in game two, led by freshman Hailey Horton, who went 4-of-6 with with a contest-leading and career-high four RBI. 

Lynch also came on in extras to pick up the win, pushing her total to six on the season.

CUA opens Landmark play this weekend and continues a 14-game road swing to open the season at Moravian on Saturday.
