Box Score Westminster, Md. - The Catholic University of America football team opened the 2015 season at Gill Stadium on Labor Day Weekend, facing off against the McDaniel Green Terror. CUA trailed by as many as 16 and were down by five with 13 seconds left, but a clutch touchdown pass led to a 34-33 Cardinals' victory.
Senior quarterback TJ Tutone hooked up with junior wideout Lucas Morley four times in the endzone on Saturday night with the final connection coming with 13.2 seconds on the clock and gave CUA only its second lead of the game and an impressive come-from-behind victory.
Tutone finished his day with 356 yards passing to go along with the four scores and added 38 yards on the ground. Morley was the beneficiary of his QB whipping the ball around the gridiron, grabbing 13 passes for 210 yards and all four of Tutone's TD's.
The Cardinals trailed 23-7 at the half, but rallied to make it a 30-28 game with less than three minutes to play. McDaniel added a late field goal, forcing CUA to look for a touchdown late in the contest.
Tutone went back to the well one last time however, as his 31st completion of the night found Morley streaking up the sideline for the win.
McDaniel struck first with a field goal in the first quarter, but Catholic immediately responded on the next drive. An impressive spin out of a would-be tackle by Tutone led to a first down near the 50-yard line and on the next play, he found Morley for a deep pass completion, bringing CUA down to the four yard line. Two plays later, Matt McMahon took a wildcat snap and dove into the endzone for the score and an eventual 7-3 lead.
Each team had an answer for each other all night as the Green Terror took a 10-7 lead after a 10-yard touchdown rush by Matt Caffey at the start of the second quarter.
The first turnover of the game did not go the Cardinals way as a tipped pass led to a McDaniel interception and gave the Terror the ball on the CUA's 45-yard line, ending what was shaping up as a strong Catholic drive.
McDaniel went down to the 11-yard line, but the Cardinals stood strong to stop the Green Terror on 3rd-and-11, holding them to a field goal and just a one-score advantage at 13-7.
The lead extended with just three minutes to go in the first half on a long pass-play set up on a screen pass that went for 58 yards and a 20-7 McDaniel lead. The Green Terror also looked to blow it open late in the half with a another long drive, but the Catholic defense was able to hold them to 42-yard field goal.
The Catholic D continued to impress after the half and held the Terror off the scoreboard in the third quarter. The offense then added a long drive at the end of the quarter that cut the deficit to just nine as Tutone connected with Morley on an eight-yard slant for the touchdown.
The rebuttal came quickly though as McDaniel charged down the field and capped its drive with a 32-yard touchdown reception to negate a tremendous third quarter by the Cardinals.
CUA continued to push offensively late in the game, driving again after the McDaniel score. The 11-play, 60 yard drive was made possible as the Cards converted on fourth down into the redzone as Tutone found senior Jamie Young on the crucial conversion. On the next play Tutone again found Morley, brining Catholic back to within seven, 30-21.
The Cardinals' momentum carried over to its defense as they came up with a big stop on third down, forcing a punt and getting the ball back on their own 20 with eight minutes to play.
Catholic could not get anything going offensively, but a muffed punt by McDaniel led to the Cardinals gaining possession on the 22-yard line thanks to the a fumble recovery.
Two plays later Tutone found Morley for his third score of the game to make it just a two-point game after the extra point.
McDaniel looked to be driving to another score on the next drive, but junior defensive end Anthony Sferra came up with a huge sack on third down in CUA territory to force a punt and get possession back for the Cardinals with 2:36 remaining.
Catholic looked to be set up to move toward midfield, but a fumble ended that comeback attempt. It also led to a McDaniel field goal, but set up the late CUA magic.
It was the dynamic duo again as Tutone found Morley with just 13.2 seconds left on the long touchdown and the eventual Catholic victory.
CUA heads home and prepares for its first game at Cardinal Stadium, next Saturday at 1 p.m., against Rochester.
