Cardinals Take Down Juniata, Earn Conference Playoff Spot

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America softball team claimed win in their final two conference games of the season over Juniata (4-2, 16-8) to earn themselves a spot in the Landmark Conference playoffs.

In game one the Cards took a 4-2 victory after Megan Colline pitched seven innings for her eighth win of the season.

Catholic's first run came from a solo-homerun from Erin Adams in the top of the four after trailing Juniata 2-0 for two innings.  Rebekah Hoisl followed with a two run homer in the top of the fifth for the go-ahead runs and Amy Laughner scored and insurance run on a wild pitch to Christy Sanchez.

With a playoff spot in reach the Cardinals carried their game one momentum into game two, scoring eight runs in the first three innings. Christy Sanchez ripped a triple into right field that scored Kristina Louzapone. Tayler Falvey stepped to the batter's box next and crushed a two-run homer.

In the second inning Victoria Marcavage notched and unearned run after an Eagles' fielding error and Laughner sent a two-run homerun over the West End Field fence. Adams earned the Cards eighter run of the event after a bases loaded walk to Hoisl.

With eight runs on the board for Catholic through the third inning, Juniata rallied scoring seven in the bottom of the third, but that would stop the Cards. With two more in fourth and five more in the fifth the Cardinals went ahead 15-8 and notched one more in the seventh to secure their 2015 Landmark Conference, third seed, playoff spot.

Kimberly Giurlando took the mound in the game two pitching 2.2 innings with four strikeouts to earn her fifth win of the year. Colline stepped in for relieve to pitch the final 4.1 innings and tossed two strike outs.

The Cardinals are slated to close their regular season Sunday, April 26 at home against Salisbury and will open post season play against Moravian College.
