Box Score 2 WASHINGTON - After dropping game one in a Landmark Conference double header to Elizabethtown on Sunday, The Catholic University of America softball team took game two with a walk off double from Tayler Falvey in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In game one of the afternoon the Blue Jays took a 3-1 lead in the first inning. Elizabethtown earned one additional run in the fourth and their last of the event in the top of the sixth for a 5-1 lead going into the final inning.
The game seemed to be all but over for the Cards going into the seventh when they rallied, scoring 3 additional runs, but fell short ending the first competition of the day, 5-4, in favor of the Blue Jays.
CUA's Rebekah Hoisl scored the Redbird's first run of the day off an RBI from Amy Laughner in the first inning. During Catholic's seventh inning rally, with the bases loaded, Christy Sanchez lobbed the ball into right field. The umpires ruled Sanchez's hit a ground-rule double that scored Hoisl and Laughner. Two batters later, with the bases loaded once again the Blue Jays' pitcher tossed a wild pitch that scored Molly Macneill bringing the Cardinal total to four. Elizabethtown retired the next batter to get out of the jam and finish with a 5-4 win over Catholic.
CUA's Kimberly Giurlando made her sixth start of the season and was charged with the loss. Megan Colline entered in the third to close out the game throwing two strikeouts in fiving innings.
Colline took the rubber for the start in game two and pitched 3.1 innings. Giurlando pitched the final 3.2 innings, giving up just one hit and capping off the day with the win.
The Cardinals and Blue Jays battled back and forth to put a run on the score board. Catholic carried their game one rally momentum into game two and fought to keep the game scoreless through 6.5 innings as Elizabethtown let 11 total runners stranded during their seven innings at bat.
With a blank scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh Erin Adams reached first base on a Blue Jay's fielding error. Tayler Falvey stepped onto the batter's box with two outs and launched a double to the left field fence for Keleti (Adams' pinch runner) to round the bases and walk off the field with a 1-0 victory.
The Cardinals honored their seniors, Monica Peters, Victoria Marcavage, and Laughner prior to game one. The double header split bring the Cards to an 11-13 overall record and 4-6 conference record.
CUA will host Trinity College on Tuesday, April 21 in a double header at CUA Softball Field beginning at 3 p.m.
