Box Score 2 Madison N.J. - The Catholic University of America softball team swept Drew University in a Landmark Conference double header (5-4, 3-0) at the Drew University Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.
At the end of seven innings, during game one of the spring afternoon double header, the Cardinals and the Rangers were tied at four runs apiece. The game extended into the 10th inning before Victoria Marcavage sent a single up the middle to score Molly Mcneill for the game winning run.
Megan Colline pitched nine innings for the Cardinals to earn her fifth win of the season while Kim Giurlando came in to pitch the 10th inning to earn the save.
The Rangers got on the board first with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Cardinals tied the game up in the top of the fifth, after four scoreless innings, when Amy Laughner drove in Marcavage and Colline with a 2-RBI single down the left line. Tayler Falvey followed by reaching home after a Rangers fielding error.
In the sixth inning Rachel Valdes came across the plate on a wild pitch to put Catholic ahead 4-3. Drew answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings before CUA came out on top in the 10th.
In game two the Giurlando pitched a four hit shutout with three strikeouts in seven innings for the Cardinals victory.
Catholic earned runs in the first, third and seventh innings to secure the win over the Rangers.
With Rebekah Hoisl on third base, Erin Adams launched a sacrifice fly into center field for the first RBI of the game. Adams earn her second RBI of the afternoon in the top of the third when she drove in Laughner, who got on base with a double to left field.
The Cardinals saw their third and final run of the game in the top of the seventh when Laughner reached on a fielder's choice to bring home Valdes.
The Cards are now 10-10 in 2015 and sit in fifth place in the Landmark with a 3-5 conference record. They host Washington College on Friday, April 17 at 3 p.m. before continuing conference play against Elizabethtown on Sunday, April 19.
