Box Score WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America men's lacrosse team took a 14-7 win over the Drew Rangers on Saturday, April 11, in Cardinal Stadium.
The game served as the team's Faceoff for a Cause event for the Wounded Warriors Foundation. Athletes from DC Special Olympics partook in the ceremonial coin toss. In addition, members of the Maryland Honor Guard held the flag for the National Anthem.
The Cardinals struck first with back-to-back goals in the first quarter. Freshman attackman Liam Clancy scored with an assist from sophomore middie Ethan Rodriguez. Rodriguez then assisted fellow sophomore midfielder Dylan Neville to put the Cardinals up 2-0.
The Rangers pulled ahead 3-2 from the first into the second quarter. Catholic responded with two more goals before the half. Sophomore attack Tim Keith scored his first of the day, assisted by Rodriguez. Neville recorded his second with an assist from Tim Keith. The Rangers managed one more goal before halftime, tying the game 4-4.
The Cardinals came out hard at the start of the third, determined to pull ahead of the Rangers and maintain a steady lead. Senior midfielder Chris Wellock scored an unassisted goal to pull the team ahead 5-4. Tim Keith scored with an assist from his brother, Brian Keith, increasing the Cardinal lead to six before the end of the third.
Catholic sealed the deal in the fourth quarter, scoring seven consecutive goals and putting the Rangers into a massive goal deficit. Seniors Pat Michalski and Brian Keith each scored unassisted goals. Tim Keith scored four goals in the second quarter, capping off at six total on the day. Down 13-4, Drew finally scored their first goal of the fourth quarter. Catholic responded with sophomore attack Tony Fisher's goal, assisted by freshman attack Samuel Montgomery.
The Cardinals took the final 14-7 win over the Rangers, having outplayed their opponent in almost every aspect of the game. Catholic won 16 out of 24 faceoffs. The Cardinals made 40 total shots to the Ranger's 30, and picked up 33 groundballs to Drew's 23. In addition, the Cardinals completed 12 out of 13 clear attempts, creating scoring opportunities and keeping the score in their favor.
Three Cardinal goalies saw time against the Rangers, starting with junior goalie Harrison Holak. Holak made a total of seven saves on the day. Senior Kevin Cardillo made one save, and senior Jack Connelly closed out the game in the fourth quarter for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals now hold a 8-4 record, and are now 3-2 in the Landmark Conference. Catholic will host Goucher on Satuday, April 18, for a 3:00 p.m. game.
