WASHINGTON – After an 11 day hiatus due to weather conflicts, The Catholic University of America softball team traveled down the road to Gallaudet University for a double header where they saw a 9-0 win in game one and an 8-0 win in game two.
The Cards took an early lead when Rebekah Hoisl score off a single to center field from Kristina Lozupone. Holding the Bison to 1-0 lead through the next two innings the Cards drove in eight more in the bottom of the 4th
With no outs and the bases loaded Morgan Gieser stepped into the batter's box to pinch hit for Julie Keleti. Gieser sent the ball down the third base line and reached first base on a Bison fielding error that scored Rachel Valdes and Christy Sanchez. Keleti re-entered the game to pinch run and Monica Peters stepped up to bat. Peters reached the bag on a fielding error which advanced Keleti to third and Victoria Marcavage came home for the Cardinals third run of the event.
Peters stole second to put herself in scoring position and with Keleti on third Hoisl launched a double into right center to score both runners. Amy Laughner followed reaching first on a fielder's choice that scored Hoisl, and come home on a sacrifice fly from Erin Adams.
Tatum Kelly scored the final run of game one for the Cards in the bottom of the fourth off a single to center field. The run gave the Cards a 9-0 advantage and ended the game after 4.5 inning.
Megan Colline pitched all five innings for CUA in game one, throwing seven strikeouts with just two hits to earn her fourth win of the season.
Sydney McGrath earned her third win of the season after pitching a full six innings in game two with three K's.
In similar fashion to game one, the Cards earned the first run of game two in the first inning with Lozupone driving in Hoisl.
Catholic saw six additional runs in the bottom of the six with RBI's from Sanchez, Tayler Falvey, Marcavage, Laughner, Lozupone, and Adams. Runs in the sixth were scored by Valdez, Sanchez, Flavey, Marcavage, Kelly and Laughner.
With a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth Molly Mcneill popped a fly ball to left field to score Kathleen Hulette before the final out of the afternoon, ending the game 8-0 in favor of the Cardinals.
The Cards will take on the University of Scranton Royals in their Landmark Conference opener Saturday, March 28 beginning at 1 p.m.
