Cardinals Take Down Illinois College in Double Header

WASHINGTON- On Friday, March 13, The Catholic University of America softball team swept Illinois College during a double header in Winter Haven, Fla.

The Cards took the first game 7-0 with Megan Colline on the mound, throwing six strikeouts and earning her fourth win of the 2015 season.

With two scoreless innings under their belt the Cardinals made their first run of the afternoon in the top of the third when Kristina Lozupone sent a line drive to center field to score Rebekah Hoisl. At the top of the fourth CUA struck again with runs from Christy Sanchez, Victoria Maravage, and Julie Keleti to take a 4-0 lead on the Lady Blues.

Monica Peters reached home off a left field fly from Lozupone in the sixth inning followed by Hoisl touching home plate for her second run of the game and bringing the Cards ahead 6-0. The final run of the matchup came when Keleti grounded out to the Lady Blues second basemen while Molly Macneill advanced home, finishing out the seven-inning game.

In the second game of the day, with Sydney McGrath earning her second win of the season on the rubber, Catholic out played Illinois College 6-3.

After a shutout in game one the Lady Blues struck first in the opening inning of game two to lead 1-0. The Cards answered with two runs in the first to go-ahead for the remainder of the game. Lozupone reeled in the first RBI of the game off a line drive to right field, followed by Erin Adams off a sacrifice fly.

The Cards had back-to-back two run innings in the third and fourth. Adams fired a triple into right field to drive in Hoisl and Amy Laughner in the third. Rachel Valdes scored off a bunt from Peters in the fourth and Peters was driven home by Laughner to finish out the Cardinal scoring.

The Lady Blues attempted to rally in the top of the seventh cutting the Cardinals lead in half, 6-3. Illinois could not gain advantage and dropped their second game of the day to Catholic.

The Cardinals, now 5-3, continue their spring break run in Winter Haven, Fla., with games against Kean and Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, March 14.
