Cardinals Top Farmingdale, Fall to Carroll (Wis.)

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America softball team moved to a 3-3 record on Thursday, March 12, after a 10-2 win over Farmingdale State and a 9-8 loss to Carroll (Wis.) in Winter Haven, Fla.

Catholic took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning against Farmingdale. With runners in scoring positions Erin Adams sent a sacrifice fly into right field to bring home Rebekah Hoisl, followed by Alyssa Keane sending an RBI single on the ground to left field, scoring Amy Laughner.

The Cards stretched their lead in the fifth inning when Laughner popped a single to center field driving in Julie Keleti to go ahead 3-0. Adams entered the batter's box with Laughner and Hoisl on second and third, respectively, and hit a line drive into center field to score both runners and bring CUA to a 5-0 lead.

The Cards scored five additional runs through the top of the fourth. The Rams attempted to close the gap, scoring two in the bottom of the fourth but could not gain momentum as the game ended 10-2 in favor of Catholic after five innings.

Adams led the offense with 3 RBI's while Laughner and Hoisl each drove in two and Morgan Gieser and Keane had one of their own.

Megan Colline made her third start of the season and now sits 2-1 from the mound for the Cardinals.

CUA battled to stay in contention with Carroll (Wis.) in their second game of the day, but their comeback rally began too late ultimately ending in a 9-8 loss.

The Pioneers got on the board with one run in the top of the first and the Cardinals answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning for CUA's first and only lead of the day, 2-1.

Carroll (Wis) tied the ball game in the second and took off scoring three more in the third, stretching their lead to four runs. A grounder from CUA's Adams drove in Hoisl to bring the score to 6-3 after three full innings.

The Cards and Pioneers held each other scoreless through the fourth inning, but Carroll batted in three more in the fifth to go ahead 9-3.

Adams gave Catholic a glimpse of hope in the fifth inning as she sent a two-RBI single into center field bringing in Laughner and Lozupone. Laughner struck in the sixth inning to score Keleti followed by a Lozupone single to bring in Hoisl.

The Cards headed into the bottom of the seventh trailing the Pioneers 9-7 with one last opportunity to gain advantage. The Carroll defense held CUA to just one run in the seventh and ended the game 9-8 ahead of the Cards.

CUA sent three pitchers to the mound against Carroll. Kimberly Giurlando threw one strike out and was charge with the loss. Sydney McGrath entered the game for two innings and Megan Colline made a 2.1 inning appearance with three K's.

The Cardinals continue their spring break series with a double header against Illinois College on Friday, March 13 in Winter Haven, Fla., beginning at 10:00 am.
