Box Score WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America football team picked up a big ODAC victory on Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium, defeating Randolph-Macon, 28-20. CUA improves to 3-2 on the season and evens it league record at 1-1.
It was an all-around effort for Catholic as the Cardinals led from wire-to-wire and held off a late push by the Yellow Jackets with several strong defensive stands.
"It really was a team win," said head coach Dave Dunn. "I thought we tackled very well, our special teams especially punting were great for us and we came up with the plays we needed to in order to come away with the victory.
CUA's "Cardinal Connection" was at it again as senior quarterback T.J. Tutone hit junior wideout Lucas Morley 10 times for 112 of his 300 passing yards and both touchdowns.
Tutone has now hit 300 yards passing in all but one game this season, throwing at least two scores in each contest as he is averaging 33 completions per game.
Morley continues to benefit from his QB's play as he hit double-digit catches in three games, while grabbing nine-or-more in four matchups. Morley continued to flash his impressive hands against Randolph-Macon including a highlight reel, one-handed touchdown grab.
While the spotlight has been on the offensive side of the ball for much of this season, CUA's defense stood out on Saturday. The Cardinals forced two turnovers and came up in the clutch as they faced six fourth-down conversion attempts and stopped the Yellow Jackets on five of those occasions.
Leading tackler Ross Sanford had a standout game with 13 stops and came up with an impressive, full-extension interception in the third quarter.
The Cardinals led 21-6 at the half and extended the lead in the third quarter on a Matt McMahon wildcat, one-yard touchdown run, but Randolph-Macon fought back to make it a game in the final 20 minutes.
The Yellow Jackets scored twice, including a rushing score with less than eight minutes to play, but junior defensive end James Mooney came up with a huge interception as Macon was driving with just two minutes left.
After a CUA punt, the Cardinals needed one last defensive stand to close the game and clinched it as senior captain Richard Roach knocked down the Hail Mary attempt to seal the victory.
Catholic continues ODAC play next Saturday when the Cards travel to Shenandoah for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
