WASHINGTON - Wiliam Cowan scored for Catholic at 9:15 left in the second quarter, but the damage had already been done as Mary Washington had scored the first eight goals of the game en route to a 17-5 non-conference win in Fredericksburg, Va.

The Eagles (5-0) struck early against Catholic (2-3), as Chip Pittard put the home team up 1-0 less than a minute into the contest. The Cardinals were hit by a 6-0 run in the first quarter which continued into the second period, finding themselves down 8-0 before the Cowan goal.

Ethan Rodriguez scored with 3:06 left in the half to cut the lead to 12-2.

A goal by Sean Cummins with :48 left to play in the third helped the Cardinals avoid another scoreless quarter.

Catholic outscored the hosts 2-1 in the final quarter as the Cardinals connected on two man-up opportunities. Brian Finnegan scored off a pass from Tim Keith, while Walter Hickey set up a goal for Brian Keith to end the game with a final score of 17-5.

Harrison Holak came up with 11 saves for CUA in 33:40 minutes, before Erik Hyland came in to finish the game. Hyland recorded five saves in his 26:20 minutes of work.

Catholic struggled in the circle, winning just 5-of-25 faceoffs. The Eagles turned the ball over just eight times during the game, while CUA had 11.

Both teams were successful on 14-18 clear attempts. However UMW held a staggering 42-14 advantage in groundballs. The Eagles' high-powered offense ripped off 53 shots, while Catholic had 24.

The Cardinals will wrap up their three-game road trip with a visit to Neumann on Tuesday, March 4 at 4:00 p.m.
