Cardinals fall to Susquehanna in conference championship

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Cardinals lost two games to Susquehanna in the Landmark Conference championship on Saturday. CUA lost game one, 3-2 and the second game, 3-2 in eight innings. CUA ends the season with a 20-20 overall record and 5-5 in the Landmark Conference.

In today's game one, the Crusaders jumped out to an early lead in the 1st. Kathryn Gilbert lead things off with a walk and was bunted over to second base by Brianna Murphy. Brittany Devlin's single through the left side scored the first run of the game and later in the frame Bridget Rafter's single to shortstop plated the second.

CUA finally got on the board in the 5th inning. Nina Curto singled to second base and Tori Marcavage reached first on a fielding error. Both runners were moved over by a sacrifice bunt from Courtney Burke and a hard infield grounder by Monica Peter scored Curto from third.  Amy Laughner then hit a long fly ball to right field to score the second run for CUA.

Anna Heggenstaller's RBI double to left field allowed Susquehanna to take the lead back, 3-2.

The Cardinals had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the 6th and 7th with runners on the bases, but Susquehanna's defense shut down CUA to force a second game.

Ashley Cole earned the win for the Crusaders after 5.1 innings of action and giving up zero earned runs and striking out four. Victoria Capozucca suffered the loss after seven innings and giving up three earned runs.

In game two, the Crusaders took the lead in the bottom of the 5th, 2-0. Devlin reached first base on a walk and was brought around on a double to center field by Rafter. Gilbert then singled up the middle to plate Devlin from second.

CUA tied the game in the 7th. Marcavage singled down the left field line and Burke reached first base on a walk. Both runners scored on a triple to right field by Amy Laughner.

The Cardinals' defense didn't allow Susquehanna to score in the bottom of the frame to force the game into extra innings.

CUA was unable to score in the top of the 8th, and in the bottom of the frame the Crusaders scored one to win the game and the Landmark Conference championship, 3-2.

Kerri Apicella suffered the loss for CUA after seven innings in the circle with three earned runs and four strikeouts. Sarah Hoffman earned the win after 1.2 innings and zero earned runs.
