Cardinals drop two games against Stevenson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STEVENSON, Md. – The Cardinals dropped two games to Stevenson on Sunday in the 2013 regular season finale. CUA fell 6-3 in game one, and 9-4 in the nightcap.  The Cardinals ended the season with an 18-18 overall record and 5-5 in the Landmark Conference.

In game one, CUA got on the board first in the top of the 2nd. Christy Sanchez started the frame off with a walk and was later plated on a single to left field by Kerri Apicella.

In the 5th, the Cardinals scored two more runs on a massive two-run homer over the left field wall by Amy Laughner to give them the advantage, 3-0.

Stevenson took the lead in the bottom of the frame after scoring six runs. With the bases loaded, a Cardinal error allowed four runs to score, and a single down the right field line by Kaitlyn Seger allowed another to score. The final run of the frame was brought around by Lindsay Kuczak's single through the left side.

Stevenson's defense was able to shut down the Cardinals in the next two innings to earn the win, 6-3.

Apicella suffered the loss for CUA after throwing four innings of action and giving up four runs. Laura Welch captured the win after three innings in the circle and not allowing any earned runs.

In game two, CUA got on the board first in the top of the 2nd after Rose Shaver doubled to left center and was brought around by freshman Morgan Gieser's single up the middle.

The Mustangs answered in the bottom of the frame by scoring four runs on five hits. Milly Hoyt started things off with a homerun over the center field wall, and with the bases loaded Briana Dieter's hard grounder to shortstop plated the second run.

Stephanie Ayres then singled through the left side to score two more.

The Cardinals added one more run in the top of the 4th.  Gieser led off with a single to left field and was later plated by Mel Galella's infield grounder to cut the Mustangs' lead in half.

The Mustangs increased their lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the 4th, after scoring five runs on eight hits and one CUA error.

With a pair of doubles, CUA was able to score two more runs in the 7th, but it was too-little, too-late, and the Mustangs won the game, 9-4.

Stephanie Shupe earned the win for the Mustangs after going three innings and giving up only one earned run. Victoria Capozucca suffered the loss for CUA after 3.1 innings and allowing seven earned runs.

The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday, May 3 when they take on Moravian at the Landmark Conference Tournament. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on the campus of Susquehanna.
