Cardinals split doubleheader with Greyhounds on Senior Day

WASHINGTON - CUA earned a berth to the Landmark Conference Tournament after splitting a doubleheader with Moravian on Saturday. The Cardinals won game one, 5-1 but suffered the loss in game two, 4-1 on Senior Day.  

In game one, the Greyhounds scored their lone run in the 1st inning. Dior George singled down the left field line and advanced to second on a single by Mary Schlosbon. Then, a double to the left side by Cassie Ernst brought around George to give Moravian the lead, 1-0.

The Cardinals took the lead in the bottom of the 1st scoring two runs. Amy Laughner led things off with a single to right center and advanced to second on a single by Taylor Stockinger. Rose Shaver plated both runners with a double to left center.

CUA added two more runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Mel Galella reached first base on a Greyhound error and was brought around by an RBI single to center field by Nina Curto. Later in the inning, Tori Marcavage's single up the middle brought around Christy Sanchez from second base to increase the Cardinals lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the 4th, CUA plated one more run to secure the win over Moravian, 5-1.

Victoria Capozucca earned the win for the Cardinals after pitching all seven innings and giving up one earned run, while striking out five. Lindsay Sullivan suffered the loss after six innings of action and allowing four earned runs.

The Cardinals got on the board first in game two in the bottom of the 2nd. Shaver started things off with a single down the left field line and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Sanchez. Curto then singled up the middle to plate Shaver.

Moravian took the lead in the 5th after scoring two runs. With two outs, George singled to center field and Miranda Sergas reached base on a Cardinal error. Both runners scored on a two-run single up the middle by Ernst.

CUA had an opportunity to score in the 5th with the bases loaded, but the Greyhounds' defense got three outs to end the inning.

Moravian scored two more runs in the top of the 7th on one hit and three CUA errors to earn the win, 4-1.

Keri Apicella suffered the loss for the Cardinals after giving up one earned run and striking out four in seven innings. Elizabeth Tillou got the win for Moravian after going seven innings in the circle and only giving up one run.

The Cardinals will be back in action tomorrow, April 28, when they travel to play a doubleheader against Stevenson to close out their regular season. The first game is set for 1 p.m.
