Lady Cards split doubleheader with Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Cardinals split a doubleheader with Scranton on Saturday, with CUA winning the first game, 7-5 and the Royals taking game two, 6-5. Between the two teams there were four homeruns, 34 hits, and 22 RBIs in two games.

In game one, the Royals got on the board first in the bottom of the 4th. Stephanie Romano led off with a double and was plated by another double by Caitlin McHenry.

Catholic's Mel Galella tied the game at one with her first homerun of the season.

Scranton answered in the bottom of the frame with four runs. Blaire Wilkie started the inning off with a single and was brought around by Gabrielle Santarelli's double. Romano then singled to plate the second run of the inning and McHenry hit a massive two-run homer to give the Royals the advantage, 5-1.

CUA scored six runs in the 6th inning to get the 7-5 win over the Royals. Tori Marcavage hit a two-run homer, Taylor Stockinger scored one with a sacrifice fly, and Christy Sanchez hit her second homerun of the season to score the last three runs of the game.  

Victoria Capozucca earned the win for the Cardinals after pitching seven innings and striking out eight. Jamie Hampsey suffered the loss for Scranton after 1.2 innings of action and giving up two earned runs.

Jacquelyn Rossi's homerun in the 2nd inning of game two put the Royals in the lead early, 2-0.

The Royals added three more runs in the 3rd on five hits. Romano singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  McHenry then singled to right field and both runners were plated by Kristen Williams' single to left field.

Jamie Shackles singled to center field to bring around McHenry to increase the Royals' lead to 5-0.

The Cardinals tied the game at five in the 4th. With the bases loaded, Amy Laughner walked to score one, and a Royals error allowed two runs to score.

Stockinger then singled to the right field wall to plate one, and Rose Shaver's hard grounder to second base allowed the runner from third to score.

In the bottom of the frame, Williams singled to right center to score the winning run of the game for the Royals.

Marcavage suffered the loss for the Cardinals after pitching four innings and giving up two earned runs. Hampsey earned the win for Scranton after going 5.1 innings and striking out three.

The Lady Cards will be back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to the mountains of Virginia to play Shenandoah. The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 4 p.m. with the second game slated for 6.
