Box Score WASHINGTON – After rallying to tie the score at 10 in the
closing seconds of regulation on Saturday, CUA dropped its second
straight overtime decision, falling to Goucher 11-10 inside
Cardinal Stadium. The Cards trailed 9-7 with 9:57 to play, before
staging a comeback and tying the score with 13 seconds to play in
the 4th quarter. Sam Morgan broke the tie though, netting the
game-winner 42 seconds into OT.
The teams entered the final 15 minutes knotted at seven, before
Goucher scored two straight to open up a 9-7 advantage with 9:57 on
the clock.
The Cardinals answered with goals from Nathan Chan and Brian Keith
however, to pull even with 5:29 left on the clock.
Pierce Ingram's score 1:15 later gave the visitors a 10-9
lead, and it looked as though Goucher had done enough to earn a
win.
CUA had other plans however, and following an assortment of
penalties on both teams with 17 seconds remaining, the Cardinals
called a timeout to set up their final play of regulation.
Englert then delivered a dramatic man-down goal to tie the score
and send the game into overtime.
Because of the penalties at the end of regulation, Goucher began
the extra session with the ball, and 42 seconds in, Morgan found
the back of the net to give the Gophers the win.
Both teams were credited with 32 shots on what was a beautiful
afternoon for lacrosse. CUA won 13 of the 24 face-offs, led by
Kevin Murray, who earned 12 wins.
Harrison Holak stopped 12 shots in goal for the Cards, while
Goucher keeper Connor Mishaw made 12 saves of his own.
After Goucher grabbed an early 1-0 lead, Cam Feldman tied the score
with a goal at the 11:25 mark of the 1st.
The Gophers went on a 3-0 run for the remainder of the quarter
however, to go in front 4-1.
Goals by Englert and Feldman early in the 2nd pulled the Cards to
within one, only to see Pierce Ingram find the back of the net to
push Goucher's lead back up to two.
Another Gophers goal then made it a 6-3 game at the break.
CUA began the 3rd quarter the same way it began the 2nd, scoring
two quick goals to pull within one. This time it was Chan and
Walter Hickey who provided the offense.
Ingram responded with Goucher's seventh goal of the
afternoon, but Brian Keith and Englert scored within 13 seconds of
one another to tie the score at seven, setting the stages for an
exhilarating 4th quarter.
The Cardinals hit the road for their next two contests, beginning
on Wednesday evening when CUA travels to face Washington and
Jefferson. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
