CUA earns first wins of the season in Fla.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KISSIMEE, Fla. – Strong pitching by Kerri Apicella and Tori Marcavage led CUA to its first two wins of the season on Tuesday, downing Westminster 2-0 in the day's first game and beating Thomas More 2-0 in the nightcap. After two days at the Rebel Spring Games, CUA is 2-2.

In the first game, the Cardinals started early with Rose Shaver and Taylor Stockinger both hitting singles in the first inning with one out, but the next two batters were retired to end the frame.

The only two runs of the game came in the top of the third. Amy Laughner led things off with a single and advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt by Shaver. Senior Nina Curto plated Laughner from second with her first double of the season. Marcavage's single then scored Curto to put the Cardinals in the lead, 2-0.

The Titans had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the third with runners on first and third, but the Cardinals' defense stayed strong and kept Westminster scoreless.

Marcavage earned the win for the Cardinals after striking out two and giving up zero runs in seven innings. Ashley Smith suffered the loss for the Titans after allowing two runs off eight hits.

In the second game, Apicella shutdown the Saints, striking out five batters and allowing zero runs in five innings. Marcavage earned the save for the Cardinals after pitching two innings and striking out one.

The Cardinals started off strong in the first, with Laughner leading off with a single to right field and Shaver hitting a bunt for a single to advance Laughner to second. The Saints were able to retire the next three batters however, to keep the game scoreless.

CUA jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Marcavage walked and eventually came around on Courtney Burke's single to right field.

The Saints had a chance to take the lead in the third off of a pair of singles, but were unable to score.

CUA closed the game out in the fourth, pushing one more run across. Apicella doubled to right center and scored after Burke hit a double to earn her second RBI of the game.

The Cardinals defense took care of the rest shutting down the Saints to win the game 2-0.

On Wednesday the Cardinals play two more games before having off on Thursday. First up, CUA faces Concordia at 11 a.m., followed by a matchup with Geneva at 3 p.m.
