WASHINGTON – CUA reached the 20-win plateau on Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep of Mary Washington. The Cardinals rallied for a 4-3 win in game one before taking the nightcap 8-4. Victoria Capozucca picked up her first win of the season in game number-two, going five innings in the circle and striking out three.
Mary Washington took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one when Hannah Williams singled home Kerry Busby.
CUA came right back with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning when Mel Galella doubled in Tracey Scanlon to tie things at one.
A Taylor Stockinger sac fly in the third gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead, but Mary Washington took the lead back with two runs in its half of the fifth.
Morgan Lamon's ground out plated one of the runs and Williams singled in her second run of the afternoon to give the Eagles a 3-2 advantage.
With only six outs remaining, CUA staged a sixth inning rally, pushing two runs across including the eventual game-winner.
Megan Rizzi tripled to lead the frame off, and she came home on Galella's single to left field. Galella then moved down to second on Nina Curto's sacrifice bunt, and Rose Shaver doubled the Cardinals right fielder in to give the lead back to CUA.
A two-out double by Kerry Busby in the seventh gave the Eagles one last hope, but Lamon grounded out to Rizzi to end game number-one.
Kerri Apicella went all seven innings, struck out four and allowed three hits to earn the win for CUA in the circle, while Annie Blaine was dealt the loss for the visitors after surrendering four runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings.
In game two, CUA jumped in front with a five-run second inning, highlighted by a grand slam by Stockinger. Curto added a solo shot to give the Cardinals a 5-0 lead.
The lead grew to seven in the fourth when San Daubman singled home Shaver and Stockinger's sac fly to center plated Melissa Rebechi.
The Eagles countered with four runs in the fourth to cut the Cardinals lead to three, with three of the runs coming on Alecia Boykin's double to right field.
CUA came right back with Shaver's RBI single in the fifth to up the lead to four and the Eagles were kept off the scoreboard in the final two innings.
Capozucca went five innings, struck out three and allowed three earned runs to pick up her first win of 2012, with McMakin working the final two innings in relief.
Hannah Otterman was dealt the loss after allowing eight earned runs on nine hits in six innings.
CUA is back in action on Saturday, April 28 when the Cardinals travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on the Moravian Greyhounds in an important Landmark Conference doubleheader. Start time of game one is set for 1 p.m.
