CUA splits two contests at Rebel Spring Games on Wednesday

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – CUA split its two contests at the Rebel Spring Games on Wednesday, falling to Simpson 11-0 in five innings, before downing Aurora 5-2 in eight innings.  CUA is now 2-4 after three days in Florida.

In the day's first game, Simpson's Kacee Arey threw a perfect game to lead the Storm to an 11-0 win in five innings.  Veronica Roshek and Hailey Jensen each had three hits and two runs batted in for Simpson.

Arey struck out two batters in her five innings of work.

In game number-two, CUA needed extra innings to earn its second win of the spring break trip, downing Aurora 5-2 in extra innings.

Tracey Scanlon got CUA started with a one-out single in the first inning.  She moved down to second on an error and then up to third on Megan Rizzi's single.

With two outs, freshman Allie Cain delivered an RBI single that brought home Rizzi.

Aurora tied the game at one with a single run in the fifth, but CUA went back in front with a single run in the seventh.  Erin McMakin drove the run in with a single and Melissa Rebechi was the Cardinal who scored.

Another single run by Aurora in the seventh tied things at two, and the teams headed for extra innings.

In the eighth, the Cardinals went in front when they pushed three runs across.  By virtue of the international tie-breaking procedure, Mel Galella was placed on second base to begin the frame.  Cain was then hit by a pitch, and Rose Shaver bunted the two runners over with a sacrifice.

Nina Curto singled to drive in Galella to put the Cardinals in front 3-2, and Amy Laughner's single plated Monica Peters to give the Cardinals a two-run advantage.

Scanlon then registered a single of her own to drive in Laughner and the Cardinals were on top 5-2.

In the bottom of the inning, Aurora had a runner placed on second to begin the frame, but McMakin got all three hitters to retire, lifting the Cardinals to victory.

CUA is off tomorrow before facing Coast Guard and Methodist on Friday.  The Cardinals close out spring break with a doubleheader against Mount Union and Muskingum on Saturday.
