MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – CUA jumped out to a 6-0 lead on Averett on Wednesday afternoon, and that led the way to a 6-3 Cardinals win.  Tommy Little and Tim Mierzwa finished with two hits apiece, while Andrew Carroll earned the win after going 6.2 innings and striking out four.  CUA has now won three of its first four games on spring break.

Little led the bottom of the first off with a single and moved all the way to third on a wild pitch and passed ball.  Later in the inning, Marc Hanna lifted a fly ball to center field that brought home Little and gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

CUA went in front 4-0 in the second, beginning with a Colin McCarthy double and Dan Sullivan single.  Mike McFarland was next and he drove home McCarthy with a single.

An error then allowed Sullivan to come home and with two outs, Mierzwa singled in Dan Hinchcliff for a 4-0 Cardinals lead.

The lead reached six when CUA pushed two more runs across in the fourth inning.  Hinchcliff got things started with a one-out single and Little followed with a single of his own.

Mierzwa then drove home Hinchcliff to up the lead to five, and a Hanna groundout brought home Little.

The lead remained six until the seventh inning when Averett scored three times.  James Carter got things going with a one-out double and Kyle Newcomb followed with an RBI double to plate Averett's first run.

A Chatham Currie fielder's choice plated a second run, and James Fiorella singled home the third and final run with two outs.

Carroll finished with four strikeouts and only one walk in 6.2 innings for CUA.  Rob Renzi threw one-third of an inning and Colin Kelly earned the save with two scoreless innings.

Matt Mitchell went eight innings for Averett, allowing five earned runs on eight hits, while striking out three.

On Thursday CUA faces Averett once again.  First pitch from BB&T Coastal Field is set for 11 a.m.
