CLEARWATER, Fla. – CUA ran its win streak to four on
Tuesday with a 10-9 win over Clark University (Mass.) on the
Cardinals spring break trip. Chris Fuccillo led the way
offensively with five goals, while Brendan Englert added two, and
Tyler Catalani, Sean Cummins and Brian Keith all scored once.
Clark struck first when Jeffrey Wasson found the back of the net
3:07 into the opening quarter. Less than two minutes later,
Catalani tied things at one with an unassisted score.
The Cougars went back in front when Chris Johnson scored 8:34 into
the quarter, but Fuccillo had an answer this time to tie things at
two.
Wasson closed the first quarter scoring with a goal at the 1:35
mark, which gave Clark a 3-2 lead after one.
Fuccillo scored his second goal of the afternoon 2:27 into the
second quarter, and that tied the score at three.
The Cougars responded with back-to-back goals to grab a two-goal
lead, but Fuccillo and Englert closed the quarter with two straight
scores, which sent the teams into halftime tied at five.
4:54 into the third quarter, Keith put CUA on top when he found
the back of the net, but the Cougars responded with goals from Phil
Winslow and Jonah Bass to go back in front 7-6.
With a little over two minutes left in the quarter, Cummins scored
his fourth goal of the season, which tied things up at seven as the
teams headed for the final 15 minutes.
The back-and-forth continued when Wasson netted his third score of
the day early in the fourth to put the Cougars back on top.
Not to be outdone, Fuccillo came right back with his 19th goal of
the season, and the teams were once again tied.
With under five minutes to go, Englert found the back of the net
to put CUA in front 9-8, and 1:13 later, Fuccillo scored goal
number-five to give the Cardinals a two-goal advantage.
Clark refused to go away quietly, pulling within one on Graham
Werner's score with 1:11 left to play but the Cougars could
not get any closer and CUA picked up its fifth win of the
season.
CUA finished with a 33-25 advantage in shots, while Clark
dominated the face-offs, winning 16 of 22 at the X.
Patrick Pfaff stopped eight shots in goal for the winners, while
Clark's keeper, Andrew DeVito sent back 19 shots.
CUA continues its spring break trip on Saturday, March 10 when the
Cardinals travel to face Guilford in North Carolina. The
opening face-off is set for 1 p.m.
