CUA outscores Bison 32-2 in doubleheader sweep

WASHINGTON – CUA got its offense in gear on Sunday, sweeping Gallaudet in a doubleheader by scores of 17-1 and 15-1. Nina Curto went a perfect 6 for 6 in the two games, while Megan Rizzi finished 5 for 6 with four runs scored.

In game one CUA wasted little time in taking a lead, scoring four runs in the top of the first.  Taylor Stockinger and Mel Galella reached on errors, and Stockinger came around on yet another error to make it 1-0.

Rizzi scored on an Erin McMakin ground out and Curto drove in two runs with a double to center.

The Cardinals scored three more times in the second with Amy Laughner leading off with a double and then moving up to third on a passed ball.  Rizzi doubled the freshman in and McMakin brought Rizzi home with a double of her own.

Tracey Scanlon's single scored McMakin and the Cardinals were in front by seven.

Galella and Rizzi doubled home runs in the third to make it 9-0 CUA, and Gallaudet got on the board in the bottom half of the inning when Alicia Johnson singled home Nicole O'Malley.

The Cardinals answered with seven more runs in the fourth to take complete control of things.  Danielle Nichols doubled in two of the runs, Melissa Rebechi singled in one, Curto drove one in with a sac fly and the other three came home thanks to Bison errors.

CUA closed things out with a single run in the fifth when Rebechi singled home Sam Daubman.

Erin McMakin earned the win for the Cardinals after going 3.0 innings and allowing one run and four hits, before turning things over to Cecilia Ehresman for the final two innings.  She allowed just one hit, while striking out three.

Rachel Sweigart took the loss for Gallaudet after surrendering seven earned runs on 13 hits.

Rizzi and Curto led the CUA offense with three hits apiece, while Rebechi and Nichols finished with two each.  Rebechi, Rizzi, McMakin, Curto and Nichols all drove in at least two runs.

Game two saw more of the same with CUA jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Laughner scored on a Bison error.

Stockinger drove in two runs with a single in the second, with Rizzi and Curto adding RBIs to up the Cardinals lead to five.

Two more CUA runners crossed home in the third, including Rose Shaver, who came home thanks to an Allie Cain sacrifice fly, and Monica Peters, who crossed following a Stockinger double.

In the fourth, the Cardinals pushed three more across.  Galella doubled home two of the runs and Beth Ratke's sac fly brought home the other to make it 10-0.

Gallaudet got on the board with a single run in the fourth, but CUA answered with five runs in the fifth, beginning with a Stockinger home run to lead things off.

Laughner then crossed thanks to an error, Shaver brought home a run with a sac fly, and Monica Peters and Cain drove in runs with singles.

Gallaudet put the leadoff hitter on in the fifth, but Victoria Capozucca retired the next three hitters to end the game for CUA.

Kerri Apicella earned the win for the Cardinals, after going 3.0 innings and not allowing a run, while Montana Murphy took the loss after giving up seven earned runs on 14 hits.

Stockinger finished the second game with three hits, four RBI and two runs scored, while Curto totaled three hits and Laughner, Rizzi, Peters and Cain tallied two hits.
