BETHLEHEM, Pa. – CUA dropped its first two games of
Landmark Conference play against Moravian, falling 5-2 in the
opener and 16-1 in game two on Saturday. CUA finished with 19
hits between the two games, but was only able to push three runs
across.
Moravian struck first in game one, scoring a single run in the
bottom of the first. Austin Rock's two-out single
brought home Dave Zubia, but CUA answered with a run in the
second. Mike McFarland's sac fly plated Brendan Breslin
and tied things at one.
Marc Hanna came home on a Moravian error in the third inning and
the Cardinals were on top.
The lead was short-lived though, with the Greyhounds scoring three
times in the bottom half to go on top 4-2. Zubia drove in one
of the runs with a groundout, Daniel Seitzinger came home on a wild
pitch and Gregg Steinman drove in a run with a single.
Moravian added another run in the sixth to go on top by three, but
CUA did not go away quietly in the seventh. Dave Grear
singled with one out and was replaced by pinch runner Dan Haus.
Breslin then singled to put two runners on, but the next two
batters were retired and the Greyhounds had taken the first
game.
Andrew Carroll took the loss for CUA after allowing three earned
runs in 2.1 innings, while Tommy Mariano went all seven innings for
Moravian, striking out four during that time, to earn the win.
CUA took the first lead of game two when Matt Grieb singled home
Tommy Little with two outs in the first, but the Greyhounds took
over from there.
Moravian scored twice in the first inning and three more times in
the second to open up an early 5-1 lead.
The Greyhounds then blew things open with a six-run sixth to sweep
the doubleheader.
Brendan Close went all seven innings for Moravian in the nightcap,
allowing just one run, while striking out 10. Adam
Schroth was dealt the loss after he allowed five runs in 2.0
innings.
The teams will wrap up their three-game set on Sunday morning
beginning at 11.
