Cardinals win two on Senior Day, now have most wins since '02

WASHINGTON – CUA won a pair of matches on Saturday, celebrating Senior Day with wins over Bridgewater and Frostburg State.  The Cardinals have won 26 matches this season, their most since 2002, and enter this week's conference tournament as the second seed.

CUA got past Bridgewater in straight sets, downing the Eagles by scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-16.

Senior Claudia Jean posted a double-double for the Cardinals, with 13 kills and 12 digs, while Bridget Kulesh added eight kills and Kelly Crimmins totaled seven.

Senior Kristina Purcell led the way with 19 digs and freshman Mariana Cruz handed out a team-high 32 assists.

For Bridgewater, Casey O'Leary finished with 14 digs and Megan Grimes totaled nine kills.

Lindsay Kallam led the Eagles with 28 assists.

Against Frostburg State, CUA won the first two sets easily, by scores of 25-11 and 25-17.  The Bobcats then answered with a 25-16 third set win, before the Cardinals regrouped and came away with a 25-22 win in the fourth set.

Cruz had 33 assists this time around, with classmate Fallon Foster totaling eight.

Jean (22), Purcell (18) and Katie Chefalas (10) all finished in double figures in digs, while Jean (14) Chefalas (10) and Crimmins (10) totaled double-digit kills.

Prior to the second match, CUA honored its senior class of Chefalas, Crimmins, Jean and Purcell.  Those four ladies have carried the Cardinals to 95 victories, four 20-win seasons, four Landmark Conference Tournament appearances, and four trips to the conference tournament semifinals in their careers together.

CUA will now head to Huntingdon, Pa., on Saturday, November 3 where the Cardinals will take on the winner of Goucher-Moravian in the conference semifinals.  The semifinal match will begin at 1:30 p.m.

The conference finals are that same day at 7.
