CUA pulls away from No. 17 Eagles to earn 12-8 win

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – No. 10 CUA ran its win streak to four games with a 12-8 win at No. 17 Mary Washington (7-5) on Monday afternoon.  The Cardinals (5-1) scored seven second half goals to snap a 5-5 halftime tie and earn their second win over a nationally ranked opponent.  Mary Swarthout led CUA with five goals, all coming in the second half.

Mary Washington led 2-0 after ten minutes had gone by before Kate Robinson got CUA on the board with a goal 17:22 before halftime.  An Allie Kimmelman score then made it 3-1 in favor of the Eagles, but the Cardinals responded with four straight goals to surge in front 5-3.

Mary Robinson scored three times and Meghan Brady found the back of the net once during CUA's 4-0 run.

Kimmelman and Keller Torrey added a pair of scores in the final 1:04 of the half though, sending the teams into intermission knotted at five.

Swarthout got on the board for the first time with a goal 5:11 into the second half and Mary Robinson soon followed with her fourth score of the day as CUA grabbed a 7-5 advantage.

Swarthout then put CUA in front by three with her second goal of the day with 22:25 left to play.

Two straight scores by the Eagles made it an 8-7 game with just over 20 minutes remaining, but Swarthout found the back of the net with 19:52 on the clock and CUA's lead was once again two.

In a span of 1:04 Brady and Swarthout scored back-to-back goals to make it 11-7, and Swarthout then added another goal, this one coming off an assist from Kate Robinson with 9:14 to play, and the lead was five.

Kimmelman scored what proved to be the game's final goal with 9:01 remaining and CUA held Mary Washington off the board for the remainder of the contest to seal its fifth win of the year.

CUA took ten more shots than the Eagles, 31-21, and scooped up 27 ground balls to Mary Washington's 21. 

Swarthout led the Cardinals with five ground balls, while Meghan Murray picked up four.  Kate Robinson caused a team-high four turnovers and Brady and Swarthout caused two apiece.

Gabby Sena played all 60 minutes in goal for the Cardinals and turned back nine shots, including six in the first half, and three CUA players, Katie Buonpastore, Swarthout and Lindsay Davenport handed out two assists.

Taylor Parker led the home team with five ground balls and five different Eagles caused two turnovers each.  Dani Guigll stopped eight shots in goal and also picked up three GBs.

On Thursday CUA will host 12th-ranked Middlebury inside Cardinal Stadium.  It is CUA's Lax 4 Life game and start time is slated for 5 p.m.  The game will be shown live on cuacardinals.com.
