CUA finishes second after going 3-1 at Worthington Classic

WASHINGTON – The Cardinals wrapped up a 3-1 weekend and second place finish at the eight-team Worthington Classic on Saturday, splitting a pair of matches with Virginia Welseyan and host Gallaudet.  The Cardinals won the first match 3-0 against the Marlins, before falling to the Bison 3-1.

On Friday, the Cardinals defeated Rowan and Keuka by identical 3-0 scores to equal their best start since 2001 with a record of 17-2.

In Saturday's first match, CUA took down Virginia Wesleyan in straight sets, with game scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-13. 

Individually, Claudia Jean had a terrific match with 19 digs and 13 kills, while Bridget Kulesh totaled 13 kills and seven digs.

Kristina Purcell registered 18 digs and Michaela Carroll added 13 digs to go along with her 37 assists.  Molly Owens finished with five kills and three blocks and Kelly Crimmins posted six kills.

Erin Paton's 14 digs led the Marlins, while three different players (Allie Bal), Mallory Slade, Paton) handed out eight assists.

Later in the day CUA dropped three of four to Gallaudet by scores of 25-16, 25-23, 19-25 and 25-19.

Carroll handed out 30 assists and added 16 digs, while Jean came up with another double-double, posting 15 kills and 24 digs.

Purcell finished with 18 digs and Katie Chefalas totaled eight kills, one more than Kulesh .  Owens added five kills and six blocks for the Cardinals.

Gallaudet was led by Sarah Tubert's 42 assists, and Kali Prowick and Mari Klaseen led the way with 18 digs.  Ann Whited (16) and Paige Johnson (14) were in double figures in digs, with Whited registering a team-high 17 kills.

Following the day's action, Kulesh and Jean were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Cardinals remain on the road for their next match when they travel to face Lancaster Bible on Wednesday evening.  Start time is 7 p.m.
