Seventh Inning Rally Propels CUA Over Mary Washington
O'Brien drives in three runs

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Catholic University baseball team used a seven-run sixth inning to get the 7-6 victory over the University of Mary Washington Eagles Tuesday afternoon in Virginia. The Cards were scoreless in eight of nine innings but rallied for the win to improve to 7-8 while UMW drops to 16-5.

The Eagles started the game with four runs through the first five innings and held the CUA offense to four three and out situations. However, in the top of the sixth everything changed starting with the lead off Joe Devine (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) who walked to get on base. Another player got on before Bobby Picardo (Atlantic Highlands, N.J./Middletown South/Communications) came up in the eighth position and hit a single to the shortstop to spark the rally driving in the first run. Hit by Tommy Little (Hyattsville, Md./DeMatha) and Joe Maca (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Saint Dominic) each brought in one more loading the bases for Robbie O'Brien (Columbia, Md./Long Reach). The senior slammed a triple down the right line allowing three runs to score, he advanced during the next at bat on a wild pitch to make the score 7-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, Mary Washington answered with a lone run and added one more in the bottom of the ninth but it wasn't enough as CUA went on to win 7-6. O'Brien went 3-5 on the day and Patrick Quintana (Denver, Colo./Littleton) as well as Mike Goodman (Brookville, Md./Sherwood) added a 2-5 performance at the plate. O'Brien notched a team-high three RBI. Starting pitcher Joe Sable (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon ) was awarded the win on the mound with two strikeouts and Michael Bzozowski (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) came away with the save pitching the ninth.

The Cards will host the United States Merchant Marine Academy this weekend for a conference doubleheader on Saturday.
