Catholic Falls in Non-Conference Tilt Against Christopher Newport

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic women's soccer team hosted Christopher Newport for a final non-conference tilt before diving fully into Landmark play. Despite putting up a gritty battle, the Captains offense was able to push one past in the second half giving way to a 1-0 loss.

The Captains logged the first shot of the match early. In the third minute, Christopher Newport's Lexi Hazelgrove tried to put her team on the board, but Madelyn Catania made easy work of the low, center shot. This marked the first of many first half saves for the senior goalkeeper. Not long after, the Cardinals earned an opportunity of their own. Off of a corner, Caroline Aponte sent the ball towards the net, but CNU's keeper tallied a save. This marked the lone shot on goal for the Cardinals on the night.

The rest of the first half told the same story, both squads battling for possession. The Captains put up 12 shots in the half, but the Cardinal defense stood strong.

About halfway through the second half the Captains' Lexi Hazelgrove almost found the first goal of the match, putting her long ball into the crossbar in the 67th minute. In the 72nd minute, Catania made a solid save after the Captains got a shot off in a one-on-one battle against Kelsie Price, keeping the game scoreless.

Christopher Newport's Hazelgrove found the back of the net, putting her squad up 1-0. In the 80th minute of the game, she headed a cross from teammate Alessi Carrier just past the touch of Catania.

Despite falling 1-0, the senior defensive trio of Price, Alex Berish, and Katie Scully made a number of stops to keep the Cardinals in the game, facing 19 total shots from their opponent. Catania tallied 9 saves in today's matchup.

Inside the box score:
  • Nina Markie made her first home appearance as a Cardinal today.
  • Senior Catania tallied a career high nine saves in the non-conference tilt.
  • Five different Cardinals logged shots in the matchup: Markie, Aponte, Angelina Serrano, Reagan O'Mara, and Emma Antonetti.

Up next, the Cardinals will host Landmark opponent Moravian on Saturday, October 3rd. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Carlini Field.
