WINCHESTER, Va. - The Catholic field hockey team closed out its non-conference regular season play on Wednesday evening with a road match up against No. 20 Shenandoah. The Cardinals struck early in the meeting, but fell to the Hornets in the match 3-1.
Catholic struck first against the nationally-ranked Hornets, finding the back of the net in the 12th minute of game action. The Cardinals were awarded a penalty corner that was taken by
Bella Reyes. Molly Romano received the pass from Reyes, dishing it to
Lauren Keast. Keast gathered the ball and snuck it past Hornet defenders and the goalkeeper to put Catholic on the board.
Shenandoah responded early in the second quarter with its own goal, from Kierney Weigle quickly after the Hornets took their penalty corner. After they evened the score, Shenandoah was awarded a penalty stroke that was taken by Camryn DeLeva, but it was saved by Catholic's
Camryn Lowman, marking her second save of the game. The game was tied at one apiece heading into halftime.
The Hornets came into the second half on a hunt for the lead. They were able to achieve that goal less than three minutes into the half with a goal from Ava Fields and Shenandoah held onto that lead as the game entered the final quarter.
Shenandoah added an insurance goal in the fourth, another from Weigle in the 50th minute of play. Catholic looked to narrow the gap, but the Hornets ultimately pulled out the win, 3-1.Â
Keast picked up her first goal of the season, while Romano logged her first assist of the season. Romano led the squad with three shots, Keast and
Maddie Pennisi also logged shots on the day. Goalkeeper Lowman notched five saves in the game, bringing her to 43 this season.
Up next, Catholic will head to Moravian for a Landmark Conference meeting against the Greyhounds. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 3.Â
