Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Sarah Lodge

Antonetti's Goal Gives Catholic Win in Conference Opener

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Catholic women's soccer team traveled to Lycoming to open its Landmark Conference slate and the Cardinals came home 1-0 in conference play.

In the fourth minute, Sara Greaser tallied the first shot for the Cardinals. This started a flurry of shots from Catholic in the first half. Caroline Aponte and Katie Scully both added shots before the 10th minute, but could not convert. It wasn't until the 19th minute until the Warriors' goalkeeper was truly challenged, stopping a shot from Reagan O'Mara up the middle.

The Cardinals once again forced the Warriors to make a stop when Scully's shot was punched out the top in the 21st minute. The rest of the half moved the same as Catholic held possession, except for a Lycoming shot and a save by Lauren Creamer. In the first half, Catholic outshot Lycoming 10 to 2.

The second half started the same with Ava Moran and Julie Faranda both logging shots in the first ten minutes of play. Despite maintaining offensive possession, the Cardinals could not find a way to get the ball into the back of the net. In the 80th minute, Catholic finally found a way to take the zero off of the scoreboard. A series of passes by Nina Markie and Faranda made its way over to Emma Antonetti who poked the ball in for a Catholic goal.

The Cardinals continued a gritty fight to keep the Warriors from scoring and to maintain the win in the final minutes of the match.

Catholic outshot Lycoming 19 to 6 in today's win, with 7 to 1 on goal. Creamer tallied one save against Lycoming.

Both Markie's and Faranda's assists marks the first of their careers. Antonetti became the fourth Cardinal to score multiple goals this season.

Next, Catholic will host #25 Christopher Newport for Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day on Wednesday, September 26th. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. at Carlini Field.
