Third Quarter Scoring Spree Propels the Cardinals to a Senior Day Win


WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic field hockey team honored its seniors prior to its Landmark Conference opener. The Cardinals put on a scoring showcase in the third quarter, giving way to a 1-0 start in Landmark Conference play.

Lycoming struck first, scoring in the 8th minute of the first quarter. The Warriors were awarded a penalty corner and took advantage of the position. Ava Daly worked a ball around goalkeeper Camryn Lowman and hit the boards to put her squad up 1-0 on the Cardinals.

In the second quarter, Catholic controlled the ball and fought to put in the equalizer. Senior Lauren Keast attacked in the second minute, but her shot went just wide of the post. Not long after, Catholic was awarded its first of many corners. Senior Bella Reyes entered the ball and after a series of short passes, Molly Romano sent a shot towards the goal, but it was saved by Lycoming's goalkeeper. Romano logged two more shots in the quarter. Despite the lopsided score at the break, the Cardinals had earned six penalty corners and recorded eleven shots in the first half. 

The flood gates opened in the third quarter for the Cardinals, scoring a season high four goals in the 15 minute span. Romano, after already tallying three shots, finally found the boards with the equalizer in the second minute. This gave the Cardinals exactly what they needed to continue to put numbers on the scoreboard. Less than a minute later, Hope Wagner, a freshman from off of the bench, received a pass from Katie Flynn. Wagner seized her opportunity and gave Catholic its first lead of the day, 2-1. 

Despite earning the lead, the Cardinal offense did not slow up. The Cardinals kept the ball in their offensive half, continuously forcing the Warrior defense to make saves and block shots. Freshman Sophia Sullivan found her way into the circle, working her way around the Lycoming defense to increase the Cardinal lead to 3-1. The fourth goal of the corner came in the 13th minute. On a corner, Tess Hake entered the ball to teammate Molly Romano, who shot the ball into the goalie's pads. The deflection fell into the Cardinal sticks, making the way out to Flynn. The junior drove the ball in, catching some air. The shot looked to be heading wide, but Kira Bobian smacked it out of the air into the back of the net for a Cardinal goal. After three complete quarters, Catholic led 4-1 against its conference opponent Lycoming. 

Now in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals continued their offensive fury. In the second minute, Molly Romano collected her second goal of the game, thanks to a cross from Sophia Gomez. 

Both squads battled in the final minutes, but the Cardinals maintained the lead. When the final whistle blew, Catholic secured its first win at home of the season and a 1-0 start in Landmark Conference play. 

Inside the Box Score:
  • Bobian, Wagner, and Sullivan all earned their first career goals in today's win while Gomez and Sullivan logged their first career assists.
  • Romano's two goal day marks the first multi-goal game of her career and up's her total to five during her time as a Cardinal.
  • This is the first multi-goal game of the season and the fifth game of the seniors' career in which the Cardinals scored five or more goals. 

Up next, Catholic will head to No. 19 Shenandoah to close out non-conference play on Aikens Stadium. The Cardinals are set to face the Hornets on Wednesday, September 30 at 6 p.m.
