Cardinals Unable to Hold Off Shenandoah on Senior Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic women's soccer team honored its five seniors prior to today's game against Shenandoah: Madelyn Catania, Katie Scully, Alex Berish, Angelina Serrano, and Kelsie Price. After finishing the first half ahead, Shenandoah answered with two late goals giving way to a Senior Day heartbreaker.

The Cardinals had an early hot start, earning a corner in the 11th minute. Ava Moran took the corner for the Cardinals, playing a short ball to teammate senior Scully. Scully sent the ball back to Moran, who one-touched the cross in. Caroline Aponte redirected the ball, heading it into the back of the net for a quick 1-0 lead.

In the 35th minute, Shenandoah answered with a goal of its own. Catholic did not let the game stay tied for long, adding one more goal in the 40th minute. Battling against the defenders, Emma Antonetti created space and sent the ball flying, making way to a 2-1 Cardinal lead.

The Cardinal defense was tested early and often in the second half, facing six shots, opposed to one in the first half. In the 71st minute, the Hornets once again tied the score, 2-2. Shenandoah kept their offensive streak rolling, pulling ahead with a goal in the 80th minute.

When the final whistle blew, the Cardinals came up short 3-2.

Freshman Antonetti's goal marks the first of her career, while Moran earned her first career assist as well.

Catania and Lauren Creamer split time in goal, with the senior playing the first half.

Next, the Cardinals will host St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday, September 23th. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Carlini Field.
