Flynn’s Goal Propels Cardinals to Victory Over Shorewomen

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Catholic field hockey team secured another road win on Saturday afternoon against Washington College. Katie Flynn scored her second goal of the season to give the Cardinals a 1-0 victory.

Catholic set the tone for the match, taking their first shot in the third minute of play. The first shot came from Bella Reyes, and Annamaria Brown scooped up the rebound to take a shot of her own just seconds later. The Cardinals maintained possession, taking a third shot from Flynn in the sixth minute that was saved by the Washington College goalkeeper Charlotte Schurman.

The Shorewomen began to battle back, earning their first corner of the game in the seventh minute of action. They also picked up their first shot as the clock ran out, coming from Sophia Warner, giving Camryn Lowman her first save of the game. The match remained scoreless heading into the second.

It was just three minutes into quarter two that Catholic was able to get on the board. Brown fed the ball to Flynn who sent it to the back of the goal. Flynn followed her goal by another shot, her third of the game.

The Shorewomen had a few opportunities later in the quarter, earning two penalty corners. Warner took another shot for Washington College, giving Lowman her second save of the game. The Cardinals regained momentum, and Reyes added another shot. Catholic earned another penalty corner, and they held the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Catholic looked to extend their lead in the third quarter, as Annalise Kubasko took a shot just two minutes into the half.  Flynn also added a shot a minute later that went wide. The Cardinals were awarded two more penalty corners in the third, but couldn't find another goal, and they held onto the 1-0 lead as they entered the final quarter.

Both teams saw chances in the fourth, but the Shorewomen kicked off the quarter with a valiant effort, taking two shots, broken up by three back-to-back penalty corners. The Cardinal defense held strong, and the offense took over, earning two corners of their own, as well a shot from Tess Hake

Washington College looked for the equalizer in the final few minutes, tallying three more corners. They took one last shot that was saved by Lowman, her fifth of the game, and the clock trickled down with the Cardinals locking in the 1-0 victory.

Flynn notched the lone goal of the game, her second of the season and sixth of her career. She also led the team with four shots, three of which were on goal. Brown earned the assist on the goal, marking the first of her career. Reyes also had two shots on the day.

Lowman earned the win in goal, notching five saves.

The Cardinals are now 5-1 against the Shorewomen in series history. Catholic improves their record to 2-4 this season. Up next, they will head to Bryn Mawr for their final non-conference match of the regular season. The game is set for September 22 at 4:30 p.m.
