WASHINGTON, D.C. – Catholic hosted No. 21 Washington & Lee on Saturday evening under the lights of Cardinal Stadium. The Cardinals were taken down by the Generals, 4-0.
Washington and Lee set the tone early in the game, finding their way to the circle and taking their first shot less than two minutes into the game. On their second attempt,
Caroline Cristella earned a defensive, off a shot from Washington and Lee's Madeline Lancione. This marked her second defensive save of the season and fifth of her career.
Washington and Lee continued to find success in the Catholic circle, picking up two penalty corners early. They were persistent, adding three more in the quarter, but the game remained scoreless heading into the second.
Within two minutes of the second quarter, Washington and Lee were awarded two more corners, and in the 17th minute, they scored their first goal. Madeline Lancione put the Generals on the board after a short pass from Zoe Dolfis.
In the 24th minute, Washington and Lee struck again with a goal from Lee Lauren Zoota, who was assisted by Charlotte Dreany. To cap off the second quarter, the Generals earned their third goal by way of Penalty Stroke to give them a 3-0 advantage heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, Washington and Lee started off hot, scoring another goal in the 39th minute from Lancione. Catholic found a groove later in the quarter, earning three back-to-back corners. The Cardinals battled in the circle, trying to find the back of the goal with shots from
Lauren Keast and
Tessa Pearson. But they were unable to capitalize on the momentum, and the Generals led 4-0 heading into the final quarter.
The Cardinal defense held strong in the fourth quarter, not allowing any shots from the General offense, and both teams saw constant back-and-forth action. But Washington and Lee maintained their lead, and Catholic fell in the game, 4-0.
Next, Catholic will head to Glassboro, New Jersey where they will take on No. 24 Rowan. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium.
