Catholic Women's Soccer Scores Early In Weekend Win Over Widener

WASHINGTON, D.C. – An early goal was all Catholic women's soccer needed in today's battle against Widener. Late defensive efforts kept the Pride off the board, giving the Cardinals the 1-0 win.

Junior Tessa Crossed placed early pressure on the Pride, making her way downfield aggressively. Her first shot of the game was just wide left in the 10th minute. Crossed did not let the miss discourage her as she once again attacked the goal in the 13th minute. Her shot was punched away, conveniently to her feet. Crossed took advantage and sent it right back into the net, securing the Catholic lead.

In the final minutes, Widener had an offensive spark. Alex Berish was one-on-one with the Pride closing in the on box. Captain Berish made a clean slide tackle to shut down the drive. Widener kept the ball in its half, attacking once again with a cross right in front of the goal. Senior goalkeeper Madelyn Catania made a diving stop to keep it from connecting.

The Cardinal defense group of Berish, Catania, Kelsie Price, and Ava Moran were a force to be reckoned with today, playing the full time and preventing the Pride offense from having many opportunities to score.

The Cardinal offense put off 15 shots to the Pride's 3. Crossed, Katie Scully, and Caroline Aponte put off three shots apiece. Six other Cardinals each tallied a shot.

Today's win marks the first 2-0 home start to a season since 2023.

Next, the Cardinals will hit the road for a midweek matchup against Neumann. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Aston, Pennsylvania.
