CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Catholic men's lacrosse team faced off against Washington College on Saturday afternoon for their third road match up of the season. The game was competitive throughout, but the Cardinals were unable to take down the Shoremen, falling 11-6.
Catholic set the pace against Washington College in the opening quarter, first with a goal from
Will Gilfillan, his first of the season.
Logan Farrington added another goal for the Cardinals, assisted by
Alejandro Masferrer, extending their lead 2-0 in the first quarter. They were able to hold the Shoremen to a scoreless quarter as they built their early lead.
Washington College responded with three goals in the first quarter, two of which came from Nate Winters. Gilfillan scored another one for the Cardinals with seven seconds left on the clock, evening the score at 3-3 heading into halftime.
The battle continued in the second half with some back-and-forth between the two teams. Washington College struck first with a goal, and Catholic responded less than 20 seconds later with a goal from
Ryan Carickhoff. Gilfillan also secured a hat trick in the third, with a goal five minutes into the half. The Shoremen were able to add a few more to their tally, and the Cardinals trailed 9-5 as they entered the final quarter.
Catholic did not give up the fight in the fourth, with
Burke Healy notching his seventh goal of the season to try and narrow the gap, but the Washington College continued to grow their lead, defeating the Cardinals 11-6.
Colton Manorek took the loss for the game, but had another double figure day in goal, recording 13 saves.
Gilfillan led the team with three goals and an assist for four points, while
Connor Baia and
Zach Gibson led in ground balls with four each.
Jack Gibbs also had two ground balls while notching two caused turnovers against the Shoremen.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Wednesday, March 11Â on the road against Bridgewater. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. at The Stadium at the Jopson Athletic Complex.
