Cardinals Soar Over Eagles in Dominant Win

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Catholic men's lacrosse team continued their road stretch on Wednesday evening with dominant win against Bridgewater. The Cardinals controlled the game from the first whistle, defeating the Eagles 12-4.

Steven Dezelic was the first on the board for Catholic within the first minute of game action, scoring off a feed from Brady McMahon. The first quarter saw some back-and-forth until Cullen Lotz scored the Cardinals scored their second goal in the ninth minute of play off an assist from Burke Healy. Within the same minute, Alejandro Masferrer found the back of the net to put Catholic up 3-0 over Bridgewater.

The Cardinals continued to grow their lead while holding the Eagles to a scoreless first quarter. Ryan Carickhoff and Chris McCabe both contributed goals in the first to bring the score to 5-0, while Healy and McMahon each added another assist to their totals.

Catholic continued to bring the heat in quarter two, tallying three more goals. Healy began his journey to a hat trick, starting off the quarter with his first goal of the game, assisted by Alex Populoh. Carickhoff then secured his second goal off a pass from Logan Farrington to put the Cardinals up seven. 

The scoring continued in the second quarter as Healy capitalized on a man-up opportunity to notch his second goal of the game. Catholic held Bridgewater to a nearly scoreless first half, but the Eagles managed to get on the board with 18 seconds to spare with a goal from Jake Wagner. The Cardinals led 8-1 heading into the halftime break.

The second half saw some strong defense from both sides. Catholic weren't able to grow their lead for the first few minutes of the half, but had three straight goals all within the eighth minute. Dezelic picked up three points in the third quarter, first assisting Lukas Villa's goal, then Healy's, then scoring a goal of his own, allowing the Cardinals to take their largest lead of the game. Bridgewater then struck with two goals to attempt to narrow the gap, but Catholic held tight, leading 11-3 heading into the final quarter of play.

The Eagles struck first in the fourth, but the Cardinal defense was a stronghold for the remainder of the game. Shawn Zebrowski picked up the final goal for the Cardinals, locking in the 12-4 victory.

The Cardinals dominated in the road match up, going up by as much as 10 goals over the Eagles. They went 14-20 in faceoffs and took 49 shots to the Eagles' 33.

Healy led in points with three goals and two assists to total five, followed closely by Dezelic with four.  Healy currently leads the team with 10 goals and 13 points this season. Eight Cardinals managed to get on the board against the Eagles, and six members of the squad recorded assists.

Connor Baia went nearly perfect in faceoffs, going 11-12 against his Bridgewater opponents. Carickhoff and Erik Aulbach scooped up five ground balls apiece, while Populoh, Healy, Sean Salkeld, Jake McGowan, and Finn Smith each logged a caused turnover.

Three goalkeepers saw game action for the Cardinals. Colton Manorek earned the win, bringing his record to 2-4, and picked up eight saves in his 37 minutes of play. Gianni Graziano and Nicholas Mort also got time in goal, Graziano notching four saves and Mort picking up two.

With this win, Catholic improves their overall record to 2-4. They will return to action on Saturday, March 14 against Eastern. The game is scheduled to begin at noon on Carlini Field.
