ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Catholic men's lacrosse team faced off against St. Mary's on Wednesday evening for another road match up in their 2026 campaign. The Cardinals earned their first win of the season in the tight contest, taking down the Seahawks 5-4.
Defense set the tone from the opening whistle at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium, with both teams searching for opportunities to get on the board. St. Mary's broke through with just 15 seconds remaining when Gavin McKay found the back of the net, scoring the first goal of the game. Catholic answered almost immediately, as
Ryan Carickhoff scored their first goal with just two seconds left to even the contest 1-1 heading into quarter two.
The Cardinals carried that momentum into the second quarter, picking up two goals to grow their lead. The first came from
Chris McCabe, followed by a second from
Brady McMahon off an assist from
Burke Healy. Catholic held St. Mary's off, heading into the half with a 3-1 advantage.
St. Mary's responded after the halftime break, netting two goals to knot the score at 3-3. The Seahawks stood strong defensively, and both teams went into the final quarter looking for the victory.Â
The Cardinals were ready to battle, regaining their lead early when
Steven Dezelic tallied his fourth goal of the season off a feed from McCabe. McKay answered once more for the Seahawks to level the score. With two minutes left on the clock,
Alejandro Masferrer scored the game-winner to secure the 5-4 victory for the Cardinals.
This win marks Catholic's first of the 2026 campaign, and their first victory over the Seahawks in series history.Â
Dezelic and McCabe led with two points apiece, each recording a goal and an assist.
Will Gilfillan and
Connor Baia both collected three ground balls each, while Gilfillan added a caused turnover.
Shawn Zebrowski,
JoJo Pores, and
Zach Gibson each contributed two caused turnovers to the Cardinals' defensive efforts.
In goal,
Colton Manorek made 11 saves to earn the win.
Up next, Catholic will continue their road stretch with a match up at Washington College on Saturday, March 7. The game is set for noon at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium.
