Men's Lacrosse Cruises Past Eastern in Dominant Victory

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic men's lacrosse team faced off against Eastern on Saturday afternoon and had a scoring frenzy, defeating them 19-6. Nine Cardinals got on the board in the non-conference match up, with Ryan Carickhoff and Burke Healy leading the squad with four goals apiece.

Carickhoff opened up scoring for the Cardinals, netting his first goal just a minute into game action. The Eagles responded with a goal from Brett Gougler. Catholic struck again, this time with a goal from Steven Dezelic, but Eastern responded just two minutes later to even the score once more.

Catholic added two more goals in the first quarter, taking a lead that they would hold for the duration of the game. Carickhoff logged his second goal of the game, and Healy closed out the quarter with his first off a feed from Dezelic with less than 45 seconds left on the clock.

Eastern attempted to claw back, scoring two goals in quarter two, but Catholic continued to grow their lead. Gougler scored first for the Eagles, but Carickhoff answered, securing his hat trick. Cullen Lotz followed Carickhoff with a goal of his own, assisted by Dezelic, capitalizing on a man up opportunity. Brady McMahon closed out the quarter with an unassisted goal to keep the Cardinals up 7-4.

Catholic brought even more heat in quarter three, scoring eight goals and holding the Eagles to only one. Alejandro Masferrer was the first on the board, scoring less than 30 seconds into the half. Healy followed, scoring had back-to-back goals, the first within 25 seconds of Masferrer. 

Lotz and Healy each contributed another goal in the quarter, while Dezelic added two. The Cardinals held a 15-5 advantage over the Eagles heading into the final quarter of play.

Zach Gibson started it off for Catholic in the fourth, scoring his first goal of the season off a feed from Healy. McMahon found the back of the net less than a minute later to extend the Cardinals while freshmen Lukas Villa and Max Cabanas also picked up goals in the final quarter of the game, the first of their careers. The Cardinal defense held the Eagles to another solo goal quarter, defeating them 19-1.

Healy led with seven points in the game, recording four goals and three assists. The freshman attacker also had two ground balls in the game and six shots on goal. Healy now leads the team with 14 goals and 20 points and is seventh in the Landmark in points per game at 3.33 and goals per game at 2.33. Dezelic also picked up five points, with his three goals and two assists, as well as two ground balls. He currently has the second-most points on the squad with 15. Both Healy and Dezelic lead the team with six assists.

In goal, Colton Manorek earned the win, notching seven saves in his 46 minutes of play, bringing his total to 80 saves this season. Gianni Graziano and Nicholas Mort also saw game action, Graziano picking up four saves and Mort with two. 

Erik Aulbach played a crucial role on the Catholic defense, notching seven ground balls and a caused turnover. Jack Suchanek and Gibson followed with four ground balls apiece. Connor Baia led in face offs, going 11-15. Gibson and Baia currently lead the squad in ground balls this season with 21.

This win brings the Cardinals to 3-4 overall this season. They will host their final non-conference match up of the regular season versus Mary Washington on Wednesday, March 18. The Game is set for 6 p.m. on Carlini Field.
