HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Catholic women's basketball team took a midweek trip to take on Juniata in conference play on National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The Cardinals take care of business in a gritty fourth quarter and secured the 73-67 win over the Eagles.
Anna Scoblick opened up the game with a layup, putting the Cardinals on the board first.
Lauren Kraft followed it up with a three-pointer to give Catholic the 5-0 lead. Juniata's Bri Bodtorf tied the game at 10 apiece with a jumper with just over four minutes left in the first quarter.
Raquel Guidetti answered with two points of her own to once again secure the Catholic lead.
Juliana O'Dowd closed out the first quarter with two made jumpers bringing the score to 16-12.Â
Kraft got the Cardinal offense going at the start of the second quarter with a made three.
Amelia Kennedy,
Carly Catania, and
Anna Kreinbrook added two point buckets each. A three from
Olivia Boccella gave the Cardinals their first double digit lead of the game with just over three minutes left in the half.
Ella Iacone completed the half with a three point play, securing the free throw after her made layup. The Cardinals headed into the locker room with a 28-27 lead.Â
The Cardinals once again opened up a quarter by scoring first. Catania went 2-for-2 at the free throw line to start the third quarter. The Cardinals achieved a 15 point lead, thanks to a layup from Scoblick, a minute in. Juniata's Olivia Berg and Bodtorf attempted to fight back, cutting down the Catholic lead to six. Scoblick, Guidetti, Catania, and O'Dowd all made two point baskets to build the lead back up.Â
Catholic headed into the fourth quarter leading 55 to 46. Iacone scored a basket from beyond the arc with 8:47 left in the game, answering the Eagles opening basket of the quarter.
Amelia Kennedy and Juniata's Laney Gerdich went back-and-forth with layups twice, wavering the Catholic lead between five and three points. Catholic was able to handle the back-and-forth battle in the final minutes, maintaining its lead and collecting the win. The Cardinals secured the regular season sweep of the Eagles with today's 73-67 win.Â
The Cardinals capitalized on turnovers today, scoring 24 points to Juniata's 13.Â
Amelia Kennedy and
Carly Catania each scored 13 points in today's win. Senior Kennedy also collected five rebounds.Â
Juliana O'Dowd reached double digit points with 11 and six rebounds. Senior
Anna Scoblick also chalked up six rebounds.Â
Up next, the Cardinals will host Moravian for Senior Day on Saturday, February 7th. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at
Franny Murray Court.
