Cardinals Come Up Short Against Ursinus

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic men's lacrosse team faced off against Ursinus under the lights on Wednesday night for their third match up of the season. Despite a hard fought battle and six goals from freshman Burke Healy, the Cardinals fell just short to the Bears, 14-15.

Catholic was on the board within the first minute of play with a goal from Logan Farrington, assisted by Alejandro Masferrer. The Bears took some time to find their footing, but responded in the seventh minute to even the score and begin the neck-and-neck race. Healy added his first goal of the game, which was followed by two goals from Ursinus' Harry Sweitzer. Alex Populoh picked up a third to tie the game 3-3, but in the last few seconds of the first, the Bears took the lead, 4-3 heading into the second.

The Cardinals stayed in the running in quarter two, with Healy netting two goals to secure a hat trick and Joe Devine scoring one in an attempt to regain the lead. With three goals of their own, Ursinus maintained their one-point lead heading into halftime.

The battle continued in the second half, with both teams scoring five goals in the third quarter. Cullen Lotz netted his first of the game, assisted by Brady McMahon, followed by goals from Steven Dezelic, Farrington, and two more from Healy to regain the lead. But three late goals from the Bears had the Cardinals trailing by one heading into the final quarter.

Ursinus struck first in the fourth as they attempted to extend their lead, but Catholic did not give up until the clock hit zero. The Cardinals scored three more goals, first from Lotz and Healy, followed by a final goal from Dylan Cicero. Catholic left it all on the field, but were taken down by the Bears, 14-15.

Healy led the team with six goals, logging eight shots on goal. Lotz followed, tallying two goals and two assists for four points, while also scooping up three ground balls. The two now are tied for first with six goals apiece this season.

Colton Manorek was a strong leader in goal, recording 16 saves during the game, while Zach Gibson led with five ground balls and one caused turnover. Dezelic and Jack Suchanek followed Gibson, each totaling four ground balls.

Up next, Catholic will have a three-game road stint, starting with a match up against St. Mary's (Md.) on March 4. The game is set for 7 p.m. at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.
