WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic baseball team looked to get out of the first weekend of the season with a winning record when they squared off with Stevens on Saturday afternoon. In a game where the pitching reigned supreme, the Cardinals manufactured a couple late runs and the pitching held strong to complete a 3-2 victory over the Ducks.
The Ducks scratched across the first run of the game in the top of the second after a couple errors allowed David Fishbough to come across the plate.
Landon Penney bounced back by punching out the last batter of the inning to limit the damage to just one run.
Catholic cracked the scoreboard for the first time in the bottom of the fourth after
Gabriel Ruiz to right field. A couple walks loaded the bases with two outs and
Chris Esquivel also worked a free pass to bring Ruiz home to knot things up at one.
Luke Cardman came into the game out of the pen for the Cardinals and inherited two base runners and stranded them both with a strikeout to keep it a 2-1 game.
The Cardinals found a way to manufacture two runs in the bottom of the seventh to gain the lead after
Logan Eilbacher and
Sammy Burman singled to start the inning. Burman went on to tie the game up on a wild pitch and
Matthew Fisher gave Catholic its first lead of the day on a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Eilbacher.
Despite giving up baserunners in each of the last two innings, Cardman continued to mow down hitters on the Ducks and closed out a one run victory for Catholic by inducing a fly ball to center field to pick up his first win of the season.
