Aponte's Double Goal Day Leads the Cardinals to Win Over the Blue Jays

WASHINGTON, D.C.
– The Catholic women's soccer team took on Elizabethtown on its own turf, looking to defend its unbeaten Landmark record. Caroline Aponte found the back of the net twice in today's matchup, securing the 2-0 win over the Blue Jays.

Aponte threatened to put Catholic on the board early, logging a shot in the 16th minute, but the ball missed right. The Blue Jays then added a pair of shots of their own in the 23rd and 24th minute, but both were wide of the goal.

In the 29th minute, Tessa Crossed found Aponte in the center of the field. Aponte then dribbled around a series of defenders to create some space at the top of the box. The junior then sent a banger to the top right side, finding the back of the net with authority.

At the halfway mark, Catholic held the 1-0 lead over Elizabethtown. During the first half, the Cardinals outshot the Blue Jays 9 to 2, with Aponte leading the team with three.

In the 63rd minute, Catholic doubled its lead. Aponte brought the ball into the box and passed the ball to Emma Antonetti. The freshman sent the ball over to Crossed to pull the defenders out of the box. Crossed once again found her teammate a few yards away in the box. Aponte shook off two defenders as she dribbled to the baseline. Aponte then shot across from the right side, hitting the back of the net on the left, out of the reach of the Blue Jays' goalie.

The Cardinals held possession for most of the second half, proving to be the dominant team. Lauren Creamer played the full time in goal for the Cardinals. The sophomore recorded zero saves in tonight's win with all three shots from Elizabethtown missing wide.

Catholic had many opportunities against Elizabethtown, tallying 23 shots and 11 on goal. Aponte led with 7 shots and 5 on goal. Crossed and Angelina Serrano recorded 3 apiece.
