Cardinals Defeat Moravian in Battle in Bethlehem

BETHLEHEM, PA – The Catholic women's basketball team traveled to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on Moravain and open up the year with some Landmark action. The gritty Cardinals came out on top in a 64 to 62 win over the Greyhounds.

The Greyhounds scored early and often during the first quarter, forcing the Cardinals to find a way to answer. Anna Scoblick scored a jump shot to give Catholic its first lead of the game at 5-4. Another jumper from the senior and a pair of free throws brought the Cardinal lead to 9 to 6 with five minutes left in the quarter. The Greyhounds shut out the Cardinals for the remaining five minutes, forcing Catholic to trail 14 to 9 at the end of the first quarter.

The Catholic offense came to play late in the second quarter, participating in some back-and-forth action. The Cardinals tied the game three times in the final four minutes. A made layup from Carly Cataina tied the score at 23 points. The Greyhounds answered, but Lia Villa's successful jumper once again brought the game to a tie at 25 points. Amelia Kenndy scored the last bucket of the half, answering a pair of free throws from Moravain. The Landmark opponents went into the locker room at halftime with 27 apiece.

Kennedy scored the first two points of the third quarter and Catania converted a layup to give Catholic a four point lead out of the locker room. The Greyhounds tied the game with 31 points just one and half minutes into the quarter. From the moment on, both teams battled for the lead, with it switching hands three times. Catholic was able to secure a one point lead, 43-42, heading into the final ten minutes of play. The Cardinals went 6-6 at the free throw line during the third quarter.

The Greyhounds' Lanie Herbert opened up the quarter with a made layup, giving her team the 44-43 lead. Moments later, Kennedy headed to the free throw line and tied the game. From this moment on, the Cardinals never trailed again. Olivia Boccella scored from downtown to bring the lead to six points with two minutes left to play.

Moravain cut down the lead, trailing by three points with just six seconds left. The Greyhounds' Megan Elias attempted to tie the game, but her jump shot was just inside the free throw line giving Catholic a one point lead with one second left on the clock. Kennedy closed out the game at the free throw line, resulting in a final score of 64 to 62.

Amelia Kennedy led the offense with 18 points in today's matchup, just one short of her season high. The senior also collected six rebounds and went 10-12 at the free throw line.

Anna Scoblick earned 11 points, the only other Cardinal to reach double digits. Carly Catania chalked up eight rebounds, four on both sides of the ball.
