Cardinals Collect Victory over Colonels on the Road


WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Catholic women's basketball team headed up to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to take on conference opponent Wilkes in a weekend matchup. The Cardinals took care of business, defeating the Colonels 68 to 40.

From the opening layup by McKenna Karlson to the final minute, the Cardinals never lost their lead. Catholic held Wilkes scoreless for the first six minutes and 20 seconds, until Delany Bogden made a three pointer to put her team on the board at 10 to 3. Catholic's Olivia Boccella quickly answered with a three of her own to once again capture a double digit lead. Boccella tallied another three to end the quarter up 16 to 5.

In the second quarter, Catholic outscored Wilkes 15 to 7. Anna Scoblick opened up the quarter, assisted by Carly Catania. Scoblick scored two more jumpers, with Karlson adding one, before Wilkes scored in the second quarter. Anna Kreinbrook logged four points in the second, two from the free throw line. The Cardinals led a significant 31-12 at the half.

The Cardinals once again outscored the Colonels in the third quarter, although it was much closer at 17-15. A jumper from Juliana O'Dowd with less than two minutes left gave the Cardinals a plus 20 point lead. Wilkes' Izzi Toland attempted to cut down the deficit with a jump shot of her own, but O'Dowd answered once again giving Catholic a 21 point lead, 48-27, heading into the final ten minutes. McKenna Karlson went to the free throw line twice in this quarter and shot 100 percent, earning four of her six points of the quarter. 

Catholic went on an eight point spree to open up the fourth quarter thanks to a jumper from O'Dowd and a three from both Raquel Guidetti and Lauren Kraft. Sofia Travieso then went on to score nine points in a row for the Cardinals credited to two threes and three made free throws. Ella Iacone closed out the game with a three pointer, giving Catholic the 68 to 40 win over Wilkes. 

Senior Anna Scoblick scored 14 points and tallied nine rebounds in today's win. Her nine rebounds are tied for her season best. Amelia Kennedy also tied her season best rebounds with eight. 

Sofia Travieso scored her season high 10 points against Wilkes. The junior also collected four rebounds. McKenna Karlson also scored 10 points in today's matchup. 

Up next, the Cardinals will travel to Huntingdon, Pa. to take on conference opponent Juniata. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. at Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, February 4th.
