Freshman O'Dowd Has Breakout Game in Win Over Elizabethtown

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic women's basketball team hosted Elizabethtown in a home Landmark Conference matchup. The Cardinals defended their home court, winning 84 to 65.

The Cardinals trailed 8-0 in the opening minutes of the game with Juliana O'Dowd converting twice at the charity line to end the Elizabethtown streak. McKenna Karlson tied the game at 10 apiece with a stepback jumper with just over three minutes left in the third quarter. This momentum helped the Cardinals lead 18-16 after the first.

A jumper from O'Dowd and a three from Carly Catania increased the Cardinal lead 23 to 16 within the first minute. A series of made free throws allowed Elizabethtown to tie the game at 25 points. Amelia Kennedy and Scoblick eliminated the threat by putting up six consecutive points combined. Scoblick ended the half with a pair of made free throws. The Cardinals went into the locker room up 35-29.

The Cardinals shut down the Blue Jays from beyond the arc during the first half with Elizabethtown going 0-5.

Catholic outscored Elizabethtown 28 to 13 in the third quarter. O'Dowd and Kennedy each scored seven points, totaling half of the team's points for the quarter. Lauren Kraft sank a three to increase the lead by fifteen points, 45-30, with 5:49 left. The Cardinals ended the quarter leading 63-42 thanks to a three pointer from senior Kennedy.

Elizabethtown attempted to fight back, outscoring Catholic 23 to 21 in the fourth quarter, but it was no match for the Cardinal lead. Kraft came alive in the fourth with 10 points, sinking two three pointers. Catania scored seven points in the fourth quarter, half of her game total. A last second buzzer beater three from the Blue Jays' Ava Chapman was not enough to battle the Cardinals' towering lead. The Cardinals ultimately defeated the Blue Jays 84 to 65.

Catholic used turnovers to its advantage today, scoring 26 points off of them. The Cardinals also collected 12 steals in their win over the Blue Jays.

Anna Scoblick was the first athlete to reach double digit points in today's game, sitting as the leading scorer between both teams with 12 points at the half. Scoblick ended the game sitting at 19 points, just shy of her season high 23 points.

Freshman Juliana O'Dowd had a breakout game scoring 15 points and collecting 6 rebounds in only her sixth appearance on the season.

Amelia Kennedy (11), Carly Catania (15), and Lauren Kraft (14) all reached double digit points in today's win. Alexa Kenah led Catholic with seven rebounds.

Up next, the Cardinals will host Lycoming on Catholic Basketball Alumni Day. The game is set to tipoff at 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 24th at Franny Murray Court.
