Cardinals Fall in Landmark Opener Against Lycoming


WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Catholic women's soccer team falls in the conference opener against Lycoming 1-0.

The Cardinals opened up conference play at home against Lycoming, looking to earn chalk up a win against their first Landmark opponent. 

Ava Gregorio tested the Warriors' goalkeeper early, with 3 shots all within the first 3 minutes. Riley Block saved all 3 shots to keep the Cardinals off of the board. This type of offensive pressure continued all game from teammates Isabel Doherty and Katie Scully. The pair totaled 9 shots. Peyton Coron and Payton Hardy each had a handful of shots as well. Coron collected a pair and Hardy shot three times.

While Catholic was a player down, Lycoming found a way to break free from Catholic's majority possession to earn a corner in the 43th minute. On the kick in from Norah Mosely, Julia Bidelspach found the back of the net to put the Warriors up 1-0.

Despite being down a player for the rest of the match, Catholic came out hot in the second half with 6 shots all in the first 5 minutes. The rest of the match was heavily played in Catholic's offense half, but they were unable to convert.

Catholic had many opportunities to score throughout the match. The Cardinals had 27 shots to the Warriors 7, with 12-3 on goal, respectively. 

Goalkeeper Ava Rieger, along with Alex Berish and Gregorio, played the full 90 minutes in the conference opener. 

Up next, the Cardinals will travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on Moravian in another Landmark matchup on Saturday, October 4th at 1 p.m.
